Up & Down the Scale: January through June 2022

We are excited to share the latest developments and changes in the professional lives of our members. This edition of Up and Down the Scale covers orchestra administrative announcements made from January through June 2022. PASSINGS 

Judy Jelinek, a former ACSO Board Member from 1998-2005, passed away in February 2022. Among her many contributions to the arts, she served on the board of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, was a founding member of the Laguna Beach Music Festival, and was a lifelong proponent of music education for young people. 

William Kraft, former composer and principal percussionist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, passed away in February 2022. ACSO will always remember him fondly for composing a celebratory piece called Gossamer Glances for our 25th Anniversary commemoration, which was premiered by the Pacific Symphony in 1993.


Auburn Symphony named Ryan Murphy as its new Music Director and Conductor. 

Bear Valley Music Festival announced its new Music Director, Alexander Mickelthwate in March 2022. 

Berkeley Symphony named Kate Kammeyer as its new Executive Director following the retirement of Jim Tibbs, and renewed the contract of Music Director Joseph Young through the 2024-2025 season. 

Burbank Philharmonic appointed Michael Stanley as its Music Director and Conductor and announced the next installment of the BPO Discovery Conductor Project which gives high school students the opportunity to conduct the orchestra. 

The Colburn School announced a major expansion to its campus, designed by esteemed architect Frank Gehry, adding 100,000 sq. ft of space, including a 1,000-seat theatre and dance studio spaces. 

Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra announced the departure of Larry Lang as Executive Director, who has since become the Executive Director of the Amarillo Symphony. Upon Larry’s departure, Stephanie Stallings was promoted to Executive Director.

Golden State Youth Orchestra welcomed its new Music Director, Yun Song Tay, in March 2022. 

La Jolla Symphony & Chorus announced the creation of the Steven Schick Prize for Acts of Musical Imagination & Excellence - a $10,000 annual prize. 

The Las Vegas Philharmonic welcomed Alice Sauro as Executive Director.

In April 2022, the documentary ¡Viva Maestro! was released featuring LA Phil Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel’s work in Venezuela amid social unrest.  
The LA Phil Orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel won a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance for Mahler’s Symphony No. 8.
The LA Phil announced the appointment of three new musicians:
Elyse Lauzon (french horn), Ashley Park (violin), and Jung Eun Kang (violin). 

Monterey Symphony named Jayce Ogren as its Music Director.

Oakland Symphony elected Bette Epstein as its new Chair of the Board of Directors. 

Ojai Music Festival named Rhiannon Giddens as the new Music Director for its 77th Festival in 2023. 

Garrett Collins was named Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Pacific Symphony.  

In June 2022, the Pacific Symphony was honored by Senator David Min as one of 2022’s Nonprofits of the Year. 

Peninsula Symphony of Northern California announced the retirement of Managing Director Sheri Frumkin and the appointment of Chelsea Chambers as the new Executive Director. 

Redlands Symphony named Kevin Eberle-Noel as its new Executive Director following the retirement of Paul Ideker. 

Reno Chamber Orchestra announced Amy Heald as its new Executive Director. 

San Diego Symphony is moving forward with a $125 million renovation and restoration project on the historic Jacobs Music Center in downtown San Diego.  

San Diego Symphony recently received a $1.1M donation from the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. 

Sameer Patel was named Artistic Director of the San Diego Youth Symphony.

San Francisco Symphony selected Jens Ibsen as the winner of the second annual Emerging Black Composers Project prize. 

Santa Barbara Symphony announced that Dr. Daniel Gee will be joining the organization as the Music Director of the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony for the 2022/23 season. 

Santa Monica Symphony named Troy Quinn as its new Music Director. 

Santa Rosa Symphony welcomed new board members Keith Hilen, Patrick Caskey, Robert Gleeson, Eugenia Wie, and Julia Wilkinson. 

Symphony San Jose named Robert Massey as its new General Director following the retirement of Andrew Bales.
