California Symphony

Saturday, September 30 at 7:30 PM

Sunday, October 1 at 4:00 PM

Black, Mexican, and folk music converge in California Symphony's season opener COPLAND—AMERICAN TRADITIONS. Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring celebrates the pioneer spirit and famously quotes the Shaker hymn Simple Gifts. Gospel, blues, and jazz combine in Wynton Marsalis' genre-bending Violin Concert in D, featuring guest artist Kelly Hall-Tompkins. Mariachi, jazz, and rock fuse with classical traditions in Mexican American composer Juan Pablo Contreras' fun, new danceable piece MeChicano.

Location: Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Dr, Walnut Creek, CA 94596

Conductor: Donato Cabrera

Featured Musicians: Kelly Hall-Tompkins

Program: Juan Pablo Contreras—Mechicano; Wynton Marsalis—Violin Concerto in D; Ruth Crawford Seeger—Rissolty Rossolty; Aaron Copland—Appalachian Spring Suite
